WE'RE OFF TO NEW ZEALAND
but not without some progress notes
.

Ella and I are off to New Zealand for 6 weeks starting on November 17th. It's going to be a combination of family, friends, art, music, tramping, camping, exhibiting, eating, and drinking some nice New Zealand wine. I am packing up some art supplies - back-to-basics stuff this time around with nothing but my drawing tablet, graphite, India ink, pen & nibs, and an array of Derwent Inktense colored pencils. No paint. I'm going to spend time in the botanical garden drawing things I see on the ground. January 2008 is going to be a busy time trying to promote this book.

I NEED YOUR HELP!

One of my goals while I'm overseas is to draft a couple letters that will eventually need to be mailed out. I am in need of some volunteers who will take on the boring task of mailing letters. My idea is that each volunteer can tell me what dollar amount they're willing to spend and I will email a list of names, along with a copy of the letter that the volunteer can simply print off, fold, stuff, and mail. The only rule is - the task will have to be completed promptly. For instance:

1: Volunteer emails me and offers to mail ten letters via snail-mail.
2: I email letter in a Word file along with ten names and addresses.
3. Volunteer prints letters, addresses envelopes, stuffs and seals envelopes and spends
$ 4.10 to mail them out to the recipients.
4. Voila! Mission accomplished! Volunteer emails me upon completion.

IF THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU - PLEASE CONTACT ME.

GOOD NEWS!

There are now 5 finished pages out of 10 in the altered book. I am going to work on two or more pages today and could possibly have the whole book finished by the time I leave. What a relief it will be to have it finished. Once it's complete it will be time to send letters out to potential venues and potential buyers.

Something I can only hint at right now is that I have a possible link to Bill Gates, who is an art collector/appreciator and philanthropist - it's one of those "it's who you know" things, and until I have the actual contact info in my hand I'll keep it at that. I am hoping this might yield some positive results, but in the meantime I will keep pushing forward and sending letters out, or making phone calls.

Our Stampington & Co. ads are scheduled to run in the Jan/Feb publications so anyone interested in purchasing one of those magazines (
Somerset Studio, Belle Armoire, Somerset Memories, The Stampers' Sampler, and Art Doll Quarterly) ,
go to www.stampington.com and you can order through them. Alternatively, many stores carry those publications - I get mine at Michael's.

My stepdad, Harold Hart, has volunteered to construct a wooden box to put the book in. I'm not sure how the outside of the box will be finished - whether I will decorate it or enlist someone else to do it. Harold is going to build the box with a false bottom that will contain the recording device with the recorded song "Missing Children" by Brazilian band, Leyline. It will have a spring so that when the lid is opened, the song will play. Thanks Harold.

ARTWORK RECEIVED

I have received a nice array of artwork in the last couple weeks. Thanks to John Paul Thornton, Misty Mawn, Kris Jean, Donna Gill-Colestock, Chris Trueman, Shawna Handke, Chi, Ella Hardy-Spittle and to those whose work is in transit now.

GREENLAND

I took it upon myself to invite one more person to contribute to the project. Her name is Nive Nielsen and she lives in Nuuk, Greenland. She's a young singer/songwriter and her amazing voice has been an inspiration to me lately. If you get a chance, please have a listen to her at www.myspace.com/nivenielsen. She's going to surprise us with something nice for the book.

STILL WAITING TO SEND WORK IN?
There are still a few people out there who have emailed asking if its still o.k. to send work in. The answer is "yes" to those of you who have already signed up. Unfortunately, I had to cut off newcomers at some point and I've eliminated some names on the list of contributing artists due to lack of response. But that doesn't mean you can't help. I need volunteers to donate time. Contact me for details. Artists who signed up previously can send work to the following address until the end of the year - there is someone at this address even while I'm away. Thanks mom!

News & updates for August 8, 2007

PORTLAND BOUND - FINALLY - after a great trip to the east coast.

Our New York trip was incredible, but much too short. I journeyed to New Jersey to see an old friend; NYC, to visit my uncle and to do a bit of sightseeing for Ella's sake; Cape Cod to meet new friends and to celebrate my birthday; and Niagara Falls ( U.S. side and Canada side where we stayed in a lovely B&B overnight); then through a small bit of Ontario to get back to Michigan. Ella got her cast off on the 3rd and after tying up a few loose ends, we're finally ready to drive out west. We're going to cover only about 300 miles starting later today and expect to arrive on Sunday evening if all goes well. Once there I will be staying with my mom until I get settled so I hope to be back up and running this project a bit more efficiently very soon. I appreciate all the kindness I've received through this chaotic time.

As it turns out, the box design did not happen. Instead, we now have a recording device with two chips that will contain two songs for the project. I've already chosen the songs - each chip will hold 2 minutes worth of music. It's a clever, but bulky contraption and I'll have to deal with the box part later on. Anyway, the piece resembles a little computer and has a motherboard inside. Another box contains the speaker and the sound comes through surprisingly well - although, I will have to record with a mic so it's not going to be perfect. But that's o.k. because it is going to be FUN! Once I get out west and back on my own computer I will put photos up.
GOOD NEWS!
I received an email from Laura Burns, Advertising & Marketing Coordinator at Stampington & Company in Laguna Hills, California. They have several beautiful mixed-media art publications including Somerset Studio, Art Doll Quarterly, Belle Armoire, Somerset Memories, and Stampers' Sampler. They are giving us a free half-page ad in each of these publications - that is thousands of dollars worth of free advertising. We've been offered spots in the December/January publications but it's somewhat flexible. I must now come up with the text for the ad, images to use, etc. and have them to Laura by mid-September. You can find a copy of her letter at the website in the Blog section at www.honorwithart.com
ARTWORK RECEIVED - just not posted
I have received several pieces of art from people (Robert Scott, Christoper & Amber Wheeler, Heather...) and due to the circumstances, have not been in the right place to put the images onto the website. I promise to get to that as soon as I set up shop again. I apolorgize for the delay.
STILL WAITING TO SEND WORK IN?
You can still send work to the Portland address. I'm still waiting for a few "promised" pieces and I know they'll get to me eventually. Right? That address is:

NYC HERE I COME, OR, THERE I GO!

It looks like I'll be making my way to Brooklyn, New York to help my uncle, Mark Esper, build the box that will hold the altered book. Mark's kinetic works are pretty awe-inspiring and I'm so happy he suggested using lights in this project - yes, we're talking about having a little light show inside. See some of Mark's work here: http://www.damstuhltrager.com/art_pages/mark_esper/me.html

Mark is also the artist who created the chip that we're using so that when the box is opened music will play. The featured music for the chip is by Brazilian band, Leyline, who wrote the song "Missing Children" especially for this project. If you haven't heard it yet, please check it out in the Art Gallery. I can't wait to share images as the box project unfolds - in the meantime, you'll have to use your imagination.

STILL WAITING TO SEND WORK IN?

If you've been procrastinating you can still send work to my new address in the Portland area. I'm still waiting for a few "promised" pieces and I know they'll get to me eventually. Right? Don't use the old address any longer - it's a ghost town over there. The new address is:

News & updates for June 21, 2007

DEADLINE EXTENSION

While the June 1st deadline has come and gone, I am still getting emails from people wanting to submit work. I am even getting last-minute work from people who have never contacted me before. That is fine, and I'll continue to accept work for a bit longer. This is mainly because I will have to put things on hold for a month or so while I make this move out west. It's been a bit stressful having my daughter home on summer vacation, trying to pack, organize the journey, earn a living, and keep up. So while I'm in transit, and until I actually assemble the book, I will keep things as they are.

It has been suggested that I start a new book and use artwork that I receive from this point on in a second book. I do intend to keep OUR CHILDREN: Honor with Art going beyond this project, but I'm not ready for the responsibility of creating a second book yet. That may come in time, but I already have another idea for a second project and that's something that will take a lot of time, work, and funding - I will be applying for a grant once this project picks up a little more speed. If at some point there is interest in someone else taking on the responsibility of putting a book together, then that could work too. Ideally, I would like to make this an official non-profit organization, and perhaps have a staff of volunteers working with me.

Please use the new address now - there is someone on the receiving end and I have already received work there. Please understand that while I am in transit, I will not be able to upload any images into the Honor With Art "Art Gallery", and there may be periods of several days when I can't get to my email. I don't have a laptop so I'll probably stop at a library here or an Internet cafe there. If you have any concerns please email me and be patient - I will answer all mail. Or, if you feel the need to reach me desperately, please email esper_hart@yahoo.com and leave a phone number where I can reach you.

It's free to sign up as a patron - and as low as .50 a month for artists to create their own unique galleries.

END NOTES

Please take the time to check out all the great stuff that has been sent in in our Art Gallery: While this project is far from finished, there is a huge sense of accomplishment already. I have received a lot of great work from people who have trusted me to do this, and I appreciate each one of you for that. Once I am settled in Portland, I will be working diligently to get this off the ground. I apologize for this unexpected turn of events - I had not anticipated a big move like this until recently and it's been a real challenge, so I appreciate your understanding and continued support.

News & updates for June, 2007

DEADLINE EXTENSION

June 1st has come and gone and I've received a lot of emails asking if it's o.k. to extend the deadline. Yes, you can! But, the address is going to be changing so if you are planning to send anything beyond the middle of June please use the new address below.

Shawn Marie Hardy
OUR CHILDREN: Honor With Art
1260 Farr View Ct.
West Linn, Oregon 97068
USA
The new address is in effect now, and there is someone on the receiving end, so you are welcome to use it. You can still get work to me at the old address until then and if you're in the U.S. you should be fine sending stuff through the 20th or so, as long as you send it PRIORITY and not first class. If you're overseas, please use the new address.

Life has been very hectic lately and I'm juggling a lot of different things right now. There have been some joys, and some sorrows, and through them I have made the big decision to leave Michigan and go to Portland, Oregon. My brothers are there and my mom and stepdad have just arrived there as well. Nothing is keeping me here except the long history I have in Lansing and all my old friends. My daugther and I will be leaving on July 1st for the long journey across the country. I will arrive in the Portland area around the 8th or 9th - this journey is a semi-vacation as well.

NEWS

The Art Gallery at www.honorwithart.com is growing and I've received over 50 pieces of art so far. I've got a stack of new items to put up and will do so in the next couple days. The Brazilian band, Leyline, has sent the song they wrote called "Missing Children." All I can say about it is WOW! I'm trying to figure out how to get that onto the website for all to hear.

I was approached by Amie Gillingham, the Director of the online art community, EBSQ, and she has offered some form of sponsorship which will greatly benefit this project. I will update everyone as those details unfold.

I had a great phone conversation with L.A. artist, John Paul Thornton, and we did a bit of brainstorming together. John has offered to draft some letters to send to potential bidders, advertisers, etc. We also thought it was a good idea to contact some art museums around the country, and abroad, who might want to exhibit this altered book. As it is now, the tentative auction isn't until this coming winter, but that may be pushed ahead if we can get some museums interested in showing it. The more publicity this piece of art has, the more funding it should draw at auction. I'd like to get some feedback on this idea if possible so let me know your feelings.

END NOTES

Please don't feel hindered by time constraints - this project will be ongoing and I can always add work to this book, even after I've organized all the artwork within the pages - within reason of course:-)

Thanks to everyone for your continued support and belief in this cause.

News & updates for April, 2007

DEADLINE IS APPROACHING

The June 1st deadline for sending art is approaching. I will still take artwork after June 1st, but wish to start putting the book together and have it mostly finished soon thereafter so I can go forward with it. Also, I would like to take time off in the summer. I want to stress again that these pieces don't have to be huge - they can be small. Size should be no larger than 10 x 10" square and can be as small as you'd like.

POSSIBLE BOOK PUBLICATION AND VIDEO

I am wondering if everyone could drop me a quick note to give me the o.k. to use copies of artwork, poetry, etc. in a possible book for publication and video- sort of on the making of this ALTERED BOOK. This is a COMPLETELY NON-PROFIT endeavor and I'm not even sure if it will happen. It will mean trying to find a publisher who would do it for charity and any proceeds would go to charity. It's just a baby right now and not sure if it will develop but I've asked a few sources for help and will let you all know as this unfolds.

ARTIST BIOS

I am asking that everyone submit a short "artist bio" for use on the Honor With Art site at www.honorwithart.com, and to include with the art and for any upcoming advertising and publications that might be coming up. These can simply be emailed. I'm going to be emailing each person individually at some point - I know, a bit redundant, but I want to make sure to hear from everyone who is submitting art.

FRONT COVER: Dawn Thompson has nearly completed the glass plate for the front cover - it's AWESOME!:

I have just heard that Robert Pollard's collage is ready to go and I should have it next week, MMicky Shine is sending his package out today, Luiz Esteves has finished a song, and of course, Dawn Thompson's piece above, is nearly finished.

I have received new art from several people - thanks to Nicole Resseguie, Dawn Petty, Amy Burns, Cheryl A. Vatcher-Martin, & Deborah Sprague for their recent contributions. Please go to the ART GALLERY to see this work.

New artists on board: Curtis C. Kohl from Flint, Michigan, Yan D. Soloh from Montreal, Quebec.

Thanks everyone!

News & updates for February 26th, 2007

FRONT COVER: Dawn Thompson is designing a glass plate to go into the center of the front cover. She has drawn up the draft and here's what she's come up with so far:

I have received art from Angela Gue, Aileen Kushner (no website listed), & Debi Rice; and a lyric sheet from Graeme Downes. Tobin Sprout has finished his piece for the project - it's called "Lost Soul." Here's a peek of Toby's work- check the Art Gallery for more of the goodies that I've uploaded:

Thanks everyone!

I've had several new artists sign up - amongst them Buzz Moller from the New Zealand band Voom, and Carl James from Goldbug - Carl is originally from New Zealand, now in the U.S., and was also in the NZ band The Lils.

Our first artist from Japan has offered to send art - thanks Chi!

Brazilian progressive rock band, Leyline, is contributing music - very cool stuff.

Other newcomers are Jaymee Dever, Kendra Leighty & Deborah Sprague. You can visit each and every artist's websites by goint to the "Contributing Artists" page at www.honorwithart.com - each name is a link. Thanks EVERYONE!

Betty Refour has been interviewing me over the month of February for a website called Dreamish.com, which is hosted by Wendy Shepherd. Dreamish.com is a site for people making, or helping to make, dreams come true. It's basically a sight about giving. Betty is also an artist - see her work here: http://www.bettyrefour.com/. She is doing this on a voluntary basis. Thanks to Betty for believing this project to be worthwhile enough to warrant an interview, and to Wendy for creating the site.

I have spoken to Dana Sandberg from Christie's in NYC and she gave me some great news regarding the auction procedure. Once I find a venue to hold the auction, Christie's can provide an auctioneer for the auction. This would be a pro bono situation based on this being a non-profit item. My next course of action will be securing a venue so I'll be investigating some locations soon. Ms. Sandberg said that the best times for securing someone would be at their least busy times - summer or winter. I'm going to aim for the end of summer, but will be open-minded and realistic about it as well. I have not finished making other contacts - I still plan to contact other auction houses and I'll grab the best deal.

I have also spoken to a lawyer, Michael Brenton, who is going to forward the project information to an accounting firm he deals with who may be interested in setting up a trust on a voluntary basis. I'll keep you all posted.

There are still 3 months left before the deadline but time is going by fast. Just a little nudge;)

As always, thanks to everyone for your participation and your support!!!

Please feel free to email with any questions or if you would rather talk in person give me a call at 517-281-9927.

FEBRUARY

THE ALTERED ART BOOK COVER...

is finally finished (the back cover anyway). I have talked to Dawn Thompson who is making the glass plate for the front cover and she's working on the design now. Once that is finished, I will work the same color scheme and textures around to the front. Dawn's glass work will be about 5 x 7" - the book is about 11 x 13". Here is the finished back cover:
